Naturally healing the thyroid is possible, but so many people believe they have to stay on medication the rest of their lives. The thyroid is one of the most important organs in your body when it comes to weight, metabolism and your hormones, and many people have thyroid issues. But many people don’t know that you can naturally heal the thyroid and you don’t have to stay on medication for the rest of your life. Like I always say the key is not just treating the symptoms but getting to the root of the problem.

The thyroid gland is a small gland located in the front of the neck. It is made up of two halves, called lobes, that lie along the windpipe (trachea) and are joined together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue, known as the isthmus. The function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, found in many foods, and convert it into thyroid hormones:thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which then effects your hormones, weight loss, energy, and many other functions of the body.

Today we will break down the three main problems and I will walk you through five steps to naturally healing the thyroid.

3 Main Causes

1. Inability to Convert T4 to T3

What does that mean? The thyroid produces a hormone called triiodothyronine, known as T3. It also produces a hormone called thyroxine, known as T4. Together, these hormones regulate your body’s temperature, metabolism, and control your heart rate. T4 is the inactive form of the thyroid hormone and when it cannot be converted to T3 the body cannot use it and then you are not making enough of the hormones needed.

2. Blunted Thyroid Receptors

There are receptors in the cell membranes of the thyroid that work together to make T3. Often those receptor sites can be damaged and they will no longer be able to do their main function which is making T3. This slows down the thyroids ability to function properly.

3. AutoImmune Disorder Leading to Hashimotos

An autoimmune disease is when the body begins to attack itself. When it comes to the thyroid, the most common cause of hypothyroidism. This means the antibodies directed against the gland lead to chronic inflammation.

5 Steps to Naturally Healing the Thyroid

1. Stop Guessing and Start Testing

At my office I have the ability to do many type of at home testing kits. They are simple and very effective to actually pin pointing the exact problems we need to tackle. Most labs do a T3, free T4, and TSH test but that doesn’t give you enough information. With the full female panel I can see what nutrients you might be deficient in, how stress plays a roll on your health and check all your thyroid levels.

2. Decrease Toxins

The thyroid is an organ in your body that is most susceptible to toxins. Because they have the ability to slow down thyroid function. The top 5 toxic factors for thyroid disfunction are the following:

  • Chlorine
  • Bromine
  • Fluorine
  • Silver Amalgam Fillings (mercury toxicity)
  • Heavy Metals

You can support your bodies natural detox system by eating healthy foods and filtered water.

3. Detox Your Body

A great step in healing your thyroid is going through a natural detox. This is very important in healing your thyroid. Releasing the toxins that are in your body help remove anything that is interfering with your thyroid’s function. Working through the 14-Day Reboot is the perfect tool for optimizing thyroid function and it is a detox program. Also, having an exercise routine helps your body sweat and release toxins and lose weight. Eating foods that help your body detox are also important as well such as: garlic, turmeric, beets, watermelon, lemon and apples. There are more than I listed but this will help get you started.

4. Supplementation

Continuing with detoxing your body, there are supplements that aid in detoxing your system both on a cellular level and physical level. This helps restart your system and give it a clean slate. Then you can transition to adding supplements to support your body in the specific ways you need from the testing you have done. Some key nutrients to supporting thyroid function are iodine, Vitamins A and D, zinc, and omega 3 fats.

5. Eat Foods High in Protective Antioxidants

Antioxidants are in a way like the guards protecting your body from free radicals, toxins and other bacteria that can cause diseases and issues throughout the body. Consuming a high amount of these will naturally help protect your thyroid against any harm that could cause it to not function at 100%. Some of the best foods to eat are leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, carrots, spinach, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes and broccoli. Vitamin E enriched foods like nuts, nut butters, and grains is also a great source of antioxidants and last but not least Vitamin C. The best known antioxidant vitamin C has a wide variety of health benefits but is well known for protecting the body and fighting off illness. Vitamin C enriched foods are oranges and other citrus fruits, strawberries, sweet peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and potatoes.
