Hummus seems to be a popular item these days. And there is so many flavors ready to grab in the grocery store. Before you add a carton to your cart, take a peek at how simple (and wholesome) it is to make your own. All you need is a blender and a few ingredients to create this basic hummus recipe. It stores in the refrigerator for an after school snack, or even alter it a bit to use as a homemade hummus salad dressing.

2 cans drained Garbanzo Beans (or make your own) – reserve liquid
2 cloves Garlic
2 Tbls Tahini or Almond Butter
S & P
1/4 c flat leaf Parsley
Juice of one Lemon (about 2 Tbls)

Add all ingredients to a food processor and pulse until smooth. Check consistency and add bean liquid if it is too pasty.

Start with the basic recipe, and then make it your own by adding exciting flavors:
Spicy – jalapeno & crushed red pepper flake
Zingy – Double the lemon juice
Herbed – dried oregano, rosemary and thyme

On cucumber chips
With an array of veggies
Use on a whole grain wrap with sprouts, cucumbers and peppers
As a salad dressing – add 1/4 olive oil, until the texture you prefer
Use black beans and cumin instead of garbanzos
